Work is a word we generally associate with the mundane—boring, every day obligations that we must get up, and face to feed our families and pay the bills. Sounds To Go never really feels like work. Providing the soundtrack for our client’s most important days is nothing even close to being a chore. We get to take part in extraordinary moments, and their greatest displays of love. This weekend, for us, went above and beyond that normal feeling, when we were privileged to take part in the wedding of Shaun Thompson & Scott Blokker. Shaun T, as he is best known—famous for getting our asses in shape through “Insanity Workout” & “Hip Hop Abs”— put on a wedding production that emanated his love, and commitment, and left us all wiping away tears, and thinking about love, life, and LIVING in a whole new way.
The evening—hosted by internationally known drag queen, Flava, at the Edison Ballroom, and dubbed “Midnight Love” with a 1930′s Chicago/Boardwalk Empire-esque theme—began with Shaun and a team of dancers performing routines to Katy Perry’s “Firework,” Rihanna’s “Where Have you Been,” and Bruno Mars’ “Marry You.” The ceremony also showcased a Broadway style musical performance, with live renditions of classics from “Wicked,” as an aerialist mesmerized the crowd, high above the ballroom. All of the performances were intermixed with video footage of Shaun & Scott talking about love, relationships, and sex (“sometimes you just gotta get it in”). The montage included a particularly heart wrenching segment where Scott describes growing up gay, and feeling out of place. Scott details the pain and uncertainty he felt throughout much of his adult life, that all seemed to dissolve upon meeting Shaun. This was one of the most poignant moments we have ever experienced at a wedding—as human beings we all subsist on love as if it were food or oxygen, and the marriage of Scott & Shaun reminded us all how important it is to be true what’s inside of us, and love deeply and completely. After this weekend, we are all certain that we will never be the same.
The wedding itself was over the top, and extraordinary. The room was dressed up with thick, rich colors and lighting. Upon arrival, all guests had their photo snapped in front of a movie premiere style step and repeat by STG owner, Mike Hernandez, and photographer extraordinaire, Melissa Dilger. The guests all went above, and beyond, dressing to fit the theme, and a common energy of excitement was present throughout. The atmosphere at the Edison Ballroom could only be described as “electric.” The house was packed with 250 guests all laughing, crying and cheering for Shaun as he presented this incredible show to Scott. Backstage Shaun told the crew that all he wanted to do that night was dance and look at his future husband. The entire crew was on board, and Shaun and his dancers shut it down from the beginning to the very end. After the ceremony, guests all relaxed and enjoyed the vibe in the Blokker Lavender Lounge, created by Sounds To Go.
A lot of work went into creating this spectacular night, including our very own Anthony Jude Setaro in conjunction with famed choreographers Mark Martinez and Manwe Sauls Addison to produce “Midnight Love,” and make Shaun’s vision come to life for his partner, Scott.
“Shaun, Mark, and Manwe were incredible to work with, and the show was an inspiration to be a part of,” said Anthony. “Shaun & Scott’s wedding was one of those rare moments in life that changes you. The show itself was a mixture of romance, love, sex, and pure honesty from two beautiful people that wanted to share their love with the people that mean the most to them.”
So needless to say, this weekend was an amazing one, and everyone at the Sounds To Go office has a renewed sense of purpose and excitement. We would like to congratulate Shaun and Scott once again, and thank them for giving us the opportunity to be a part of their extraordinary wedding. We wish them all the happiness in the world, and all the success they deserve! We would also like to thank our awesome crew for their hard work, and enthusiasm:
Jackie Bareis-Walker, Jillian Taylor, Lauren Philpot, Lee Loo La, Mariam Giorgadze, Melissa Dilger, Michelle Zarella, Casey Webb, David Cruse, and his crew from Coastal Artists Productions—we couldn’t have done it without you.
Also, an extra special thank you to our friend and wedding planner, Melissa Loiacono, for getting us involved, and believing in us. We couldn’t have pulled off such an amazing weekend without all of you!
